CRO agency vs freelance CRO consultant: which should you hire?

Short answer

Hire a CRO agency when you need a full team running many tests at once across a large site, and you have a budget of roughly $6,000 to $30,000 a month. Hire a freelance CRO consultant when you want one senior person who researches, designs and launches tests quickly for less, especially when you have one main funnel to improve.

Key takeaways

  • CRO agencies cost about $2,000 to $5,000 a month at the low end, $6,000 to $15,000 mid-tier and $10,000 to $30,000+ at the top.
  • A freelance CRO consultant usually costs less, works directly with you and moves faster, but can run fewer tests at the same time.
  • The question that matters most: who will actually design and build your tests?
  • Choose by test volume, budget and how much of the work your own team can do.

How much CRO agencies and consultants cost

Agency retainers range widely, and price follows experience. According to the CRO agency Invesp:

  • Top-tier agencies start at about $10,000 a month, many charge around $16,000, and some charge $30,000+, often with a 6-month minimum.
  • Mid-tier agencies charge about $6,000 to $15,000 a month.
  • Newer agencies charge about $2,000 to $5,000 a month.
  • Top freelance consultants can charge $250 to $300 an hour. Most freelancers charge less, by project or a monthly fee.

Other 2026 guides land in the same range. ConversionRate.Store puts most CRO agencies at $2,500 to $25,000+ a month, and enterprise programs at $15,000 to $35,000+.

When a CRO agency is the better choice

  • You have a large site with lots of traffic and want to run many tests at once.
  • You sell in several markets or brands and need a team that can cover them all.
  • You have no designers or developers in-house and want everything handled.
  • Your budget comfortably covers $10,000+ a month for at least six months.

When a freelance CRO consultant is the better choice

  • You have one main funnel, landing page or checkout that matters most.
  • You want to talk to the person doing the work, not an account manager.
  • You want the first test live in days, not after weeks of onboarding.
  • Your budget is real but not $10,000 a month, and you want a clear return on every test.
  • You already have a marketing team or developers and need senior CRO skills to plug in.

The question that matters most: who designs and builds the tests?

A test is only as good as the variant that runs. Many CRO programs stall in the same place: the research is solid, but the variants are timid, slow to build or never launched. Whoever you hire, ask who will design the new version, who will build it, and how long that takes.

The same applies to freelancers. Some only deliver audits and leave the design and build to your team. Others, like me, design and build the variants too, so research turns into live tests quickly.

Questions to ask any CRO agency or consultant

  1. Who will do the work day to day? Names and roles, not just the people on the sales call.
  2. How do you decide what to test? Look for research and written hypotheses, not a list of best practices.
  3. How many tests per month can you launch, and who builds them?
  4. How do you report results? In revenue, leads or revenue per visitor, with losing tests included.
  5. Can I see past results? Before and after examples with numbers, and how long each test ran.
  6. What is the minimum commitment? And what happens to the designs and learnings if you stop.

I’ve worked on both sides

I designed A/B tests at Spiralyze, an A/B testing agency, then ran the testing program in-house, and now work as a freelance CRO consultant. Agencies are great at volume and process. A senior freelancer is great at speed, focus and a direct line to the person doing the work.

Across those roles I’ve designed 300+ A/B tests that added more than $16M in yearly revenue. Recent client tests won with +20% conversion, +11% visitor-to-trial and +10% revenue per visitor.

BeforeBefore: a long trial signup form with a hidden submit button
AfterAfter: a product-led hero and a 2-step trial signup
Salon software trial signup, before and after: +11% visitor-to-trial rate in a 3-week A/B test. See the case study

FAQ

How much does a CRO consultant cost?

Freelance CRO consultants usually charge per project, per test or a monthly fee, and top consultants can charge $250 to $300 an hour. Most cost much less than an agency retainer of $6,000 to $30,000 a month.

Is a CRO agency worth it?

It can be for large sites with high traffic and a budget for many tests at once. For one main funnel or a growing business, a senior freelancer often delivers the same kind of results for less.

How long until CRO shows results?

The first test usually runs two to four weeks. A good program shows its first clear wins within one to three months, depending on traffic.

Can a freelancer run CRO for a large company?

Yes, especially when they plug into your existing team. A freelancer can own research, design and test planning while your developers or analysts handle the rest.

Do I need developers to work with a CRO consultant?

Not always. Some consultants, like me, design and build test variants themselves. For deeper changes in your product or checkout, your developers may still need to help.
